Morning<\/p>\n
The cup was still there.
\nNot in the cupboard where it belonged. Not even on the drying rack.
\nJust\u2026 there. Beside the sink. Half full of yesterday\u2019s tea.<\/p>\n
June stared at it like it might move. Like it might explain something.
\nThe spoon leaned inside at a crooked angle, one edge dark from steeping too long.
\nShe reached for it, then didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
The silence in the house was wide. She could hear the refrigerator click on in the next room.<\/p>\n
The cup had a chip on the rim. Not enough to toss it. Just enough to remember how it got there.<\/p>\n
Noon<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t rinse it. She thought she would, but she didn\u2019t.
\nInstead, she moved it an inch to the left to wipe the counter.<\/p>\n
Outside, a delivery van idled for a moment, then left.<\/p>\n
She thought about the time he brought her the cup. A beach town gift shop, before the storm.
\n\u201cNot your colors,\u201d he\u2019d said. \u201cBut it reminded me of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
It still did. Even now.<\/p>\n
Evening<\/p>\n
The cup was still there.<\/p>\n
Now the tea had gone syrupy. Dust settled along the rim.<\/p>\n
She stood with her hands in the dishwater, staring at it again.
\nNot crying. Not quite.<\/p>\n
Just standing there, elbow-deep in suds,
\nthinking about how some things don\u2019t get washed away.
\nThey just get\u2026 familiar.<\/p>\n
And still, the cup sat there.
