Black tea. No sugar. She didn&#8217;t care for sweetness in the morning\u2014not anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvie sat at the kitchen table in her robe, a fleece one that used to belong to her sister. It was the color of faded cornflowers. The robe, not the sister.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the sky was pearl-gray. Her hydrangeas hadn\u2019t bloomed yet. Maybe they wouldn\u2019t this year. She wasn&#8217;t sure she\u2019d watered them properly.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t cry anymore. Not every day, anyway. But the ache still found her in odd places: grocery lines, checkout counters, the sound of the dryer.<\/p>\n<p>She lifted the mug to her lips. Still hot.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>His Window<\/strong><br \/>\nThe toaster stuck again. He\u2019d meant to fix it two weeks ago. Now he just flipped it upside down and gave it a good smack.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Crumbs scattered across the counter. Frank grunted, brushing them into his palm.<\/p>\n<p>The dog\u2014an old mutt with hips worse than his\u2014thumped her tail without lifting her head. She didn\u2019t expect much anymore. Toast crusts, walks when his knees held up, a rub behind the ears.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the calendar on the fridge. Someone\u2019s birthday. Maybe his niece? He couldn\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n<p>He poured the coffee. Black. One mug. It used to be two.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Her Window<\/strong><br \/>\nThe mail came early. She opened it with a butter knife. A catalog. A credit card offer. A newsletter from the church she no longer attended.<\/p>\n<p>She put on her shoes anyway\u2014flats with one loose sole\u2014and walked to the edge of the street. It wasn\u2019t far. Just enough to say she\u2019d gone outside.<\/p>\n<p>There was a neighbor\u2019s cat in the driveway. She said hello like it was a person.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>His Window<\/strong><br \/>\nHe sat on the porch, the sun barely touching the edge of the lawn. A newspaper he didn\u2019t plan to read rested on his lap.<\/p>\n<p>The wind moved the branches in that old, creaky way. Like something was shifting. Or maybe just settling.<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes. For five seconds. Maybe ten. Long enough to hear the world. Birds. Cars in the distance. A laugh from somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t feel better. But he didn\u2019t feel worse.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Her Window<\/strong><br \/>\nThat night, Sylvie stood at her bedroom window. One lamp lit. Book unopened on the bed.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>The moon was bright\u2014brighter than it had been in a while. She wondered who else was seeing it tonight.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>His Window<\/strong><br \/>\nFrank turned out the kitchen light and shuffled to the back of the house. He stopped at the window over the sink. Leaned both hands on the edge.<\/p>\n<p><em>Same moon. Different night. Still here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The dog nudged his leg.<\/p>\n<p>He turned, whispered, \u201cAlright.
